Vazhakkai Poriyal is a side dish that goes well with sambar, rasam, and curd rice. There are many ways to make raw banana curry, like vazhaikkai varuval, ennai vazhaikkai, vazhaikkai podimas, here is a simple and quick recipe for vazhaikkai poriyal.

Ingredients
  • 2 Raw bananas
  • 1/2 cup Onion/shallots Chopped
  • 2 tsp Coconut (shredded)
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • Few Curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp Urad Dal
  • 5 Garlic pods
  • 1/2 tsp Chili powder/sambar powder
  • 1 tsp Oil
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Salt as needed
Instructions
  1. Wash and peel bananas, cut them into small pieces.

  2. Boil 2 cups of water in a pan and add a pinch of salt and turmeric powder.

  3. Place banana pieces in the water, cook covered for 5 minutes, or till the banana becomes soft and tender.

  4. Once done, drain it with a colander.

  5. Meanwhile, heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, once it splutters add urad dal and curry leaves.

  6. Add the onions and sauté for 2-3 minutes.

  7. Add the crushed garlic.

  8. Now add chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt, and asafoetida.

  9. Cook until the raw smell leaves.

  10. Add the banana pieces and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.

  11. Add the grated coconut, give a quick stir.

  12. Turn off the flame, leave it for a couple of minutes.

  13. Serve hot with rice and sambar.
