Chowchow sambar is a delicious and healthy sambar, goes well with rice and cooked vegetable side dish. Chowchow is high in water content, which our body needs during the winter season. Here I have shared the sambar recipe in the pressure cooker, you can also use kadai or pan to make sambar with the same recipe.

 

Ingredients

  • Chowchow – 1
  • Toor dal – ¼ cup
  • Oil – 1 tsp
  • Onion/ Shallot – ½ cup (Chopped)
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Urad dal – ½ tsp
  • Salt as needed
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ cup
  • Asafoetida – ¼ tsp
  • Sambar powder – 1 tsp
  • Tamarind lemon sized ball
  • Few Curry leaves

Preparation

  • Wash and peel Chowchow cut it into small pieces.
  • Chop onion/shallots.
  • Wash and pressure cook toor dal for 2 whistles.
  • Soak tamarind for 10 minutes and squeeze the pulp.

Method

1. Heat oil in a pan | pressure cooker, add mustard seeds and allow it to crackle. Add urad dal, curry leaves, and green chilis.

2. Add shallots and saute for a minute.

3. Add chowchow and cook on medium flame.

4. Add salt, turmeric, asafoetida and sambar powder, combine everything and cook on medium flame.

5. Add cooked dal.

6. Combine dal and add ¼ cup of water and tamarind pulp.

7. Cook covered for 10 minutes/pressure cook for 1 whistle.

8. Once the pressure is released, mix well with a spatula and serve hot.
