Kadappa is a perfect side dish for idli and dosa. This dish is popular in Kumbakonam, Trichy, and Tanjore. If you are bored with regular chutneys and sambars, once you try this dish, you will definitely become a fan of kadappa. The best part about this dish is that it goes well with all types of South Indian breakfast dishes like Idli, Dosa, Pongal, Upma, Chapathi, Puri, Idiyappam and Appam.

My grandma was from the Tanjore district, I learned this recipe from her, but the original dish does not have a bay leaf, cinnamon, and cloves, I added it to give a little more flavour to the dish. I love to make Kadapa at least once a week, such a lovely food with a pretty different taste from our regular side dishes.

Notes

  • While preparing kadappa use only moong dal, other dals like toor dal, masoor dal are not suitable for this dish.
  • You can add some cashew nuts while grinding coconut paste that will be delicious.
  • You can add some soaked poppy seeds along with coconut for a nice flavour.
  • Potatoes are optional because kadappa is delicious even without vegetables.
