Vazhaikkai Poriyal | Plantain Curry | Raw Banana Curry | Vazhaikkai Curry

Vazhaikkai Poriyal is a popular south Indian side dish for lunch verities, we can make verities of dishes with Vazhaikkai like Vazhaikkai podimas, Vazhaikkai poriyal, Vazhaikkai bajji, Vazhaikkai chips, Ennai Vazhaikkai, Pal Vazhaikkai (cooked with coconut milk), etc., Vazhaikkai made especially on Amavasya (No moon day), Sradha (thithi) in Tamil Nadu.

Ingredients

  • Raw banana– 2
  • Oil – 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Urad dal – ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Chopped onion/shallots – ¼ cup
  • Salt as needed
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Sambar powder – ½ tsp
  • Shredded coconut – 2 tsp

Method

Step by Step Pictures

1. Wash and peel the plantain, add it to a bowl of water to avoid browning.

2. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and allow it to crackle and add urad dal.

3. Add a few curry leaves.

4. Add chopped onion, saute for a minute.

5. Add raw banana and combine well.

6. Add salt, sambar powder, and turmeric powder.

7. Mix everything well.

8. Add little water and combine well.

9. Cook covered for 5 minutes.

10. Once done, add grated coconut and turn off the flame.

11. Serve hot with rice.
