Chilli Idli is an Indo-Chinese fusion dish, there are verities of idlis in South India, chilli idli is an entirely different one from all those traditional idlis. This can be done with the leftover idli or cold idli, do not use hot idlis, since it is not suitable for chilli idli. This is a snack item, lunch box dish, you can prepare this for dinner too. I use leftover idlis, to make this super quick dinner.  Chilli idli was invented by the hotels to reuse their leftover idlis. Nowadays it has become people’s favourite food. It is easy to prepare, good for lunch box, there is no need to prepare side dishes, regular idli will become dry when you pack it for lunch, but chilli idli will be soft, juicy, and tasty.

Notes

  • It is recommended to use leftover idlis, do not use hot or warm idlis.
  • You can cut the idli into small pieces or you can use mini idlis.
  • You can toast the idlis with less oil on tawa if you don’t want to deep fry, you can shallow fry them as well.
  • You can use chilli sauce to make it spicier.
  • You can replace the tomato ketchup with tomato sauce or hot and sweet sauce.
  • You can adjust sauce and green chilis according to your taste.
  • You can add 1/2 tsp sugar along with salt.

Ingredients
To fry
  • 6 Leftover Idli
  • Oil for frying
Chili Idli
  • 4 tsp Oil
  • 3 Green Chillis
  • 1 piece Ginger
  • 3 Garlic Pods
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 1/2 Capsicum
  • Salt as needed
  • 6 tsp Tomato ketchup
  • 1 tsp Soy Sauce
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing
Instructions
  1. Cut 6 idlis into small cubes. Mini idlis can be used as-is.

  2. Heat oil in a pan, fry the idlis in batches, cook for 1-2 minutes on medium flame.

  3. Flip it often, cook till the idlis become golden brown, and keep it aside.

  4. In another pan, heat 4 tsp oil, add 3 green chilis, 1 piece sliced ginger, and 3 chopped garlic pods and sauté for 1 - 2 minutes.

  5. Add the diced onion and cook for a minute.

  6. Add the diced capsicum, mix well and cook for a minute.

  7. Add the required salt and combine everything well.

  8. Add 6 tsp of tomato ketchup and 1 tsp of soy sauce and give a quick stir.

  9. Add half of the fried idlis, toss them with the mixture.

  10. Once idlis are coated well with the sauces, add the remaining idlis and mix.

  11. Garnish with coriander leaves, serve hot.
