Sirudhanya Upma/Upma with Millet

Millet Upma is a quick, easy and healthy food, perfect for breakfast or dinner. Generally, we make upma with sooji/rava or cracked wheat, rice upma is also a popular dish, recent days millets become so popular, people get awareness about the goodness of millets.

I have made upma with Kodo millet (varagu), apart from you can make upma with foxtail millet, barnyard millet, or little millet. I made upma in a pressure cooker if you want you can use a heavy bottomed pan. And also, you can add vegetables like potato, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms, etc.,

Ingredients
  • 1 cup Kodo millet
  • 1 cup Mixed vegetables
  • 2 tsp Cooking oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • Few Curry leaves
  • 2 tsp Chana dal
  • 1/2 cup Onion/shallots
  • 3 Green chilis
  • Salt as needed
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
Instructions
  1. In a pan or pressure cooker, heat oil.
  2. Add mustard seeds, allow it to crackle and add curry leaves.
  3. Add chana dal and saute for a minute.
  4. Add chopped onion, cook till it becomes translucent.
  5. Add chopped vegetables and combine well.
  6. Add green chilis.
  7. Add 2 cups of water for 1 cup of millet and add salt and turmeric powder.
  8. Add washed millet.
  9. Cook covered for 10-12 minutes or pressure cook for 2 whistles.
  10. Once done, fluff the upma with a spatula.
  11. Serve hot with chutney or sambar.

Method
