Nei appam | Sweet Appam | How to make appam | Sweet paniyaram

Nei Appam is a popular dish in Kerala. It is prepared for neivedyam/prasadam for god and it is served in temples as prasadam. Authentic Kerala nei appam prepared with raw rice, jaggery, overripe banana, fried coconut chunks, and cardamom powder.  It also a tasty snack and kids’ favorite too. Nei appam is also popular in Tamilnadu too, it is prepared for karthigai deepam. For authentic Kerala nei appam, we need to soak raw rice and grind it along with ripe banana, jaggery powder, and cardamom, fry in hot ghee or ghee and oil mixture. Traditional nei appam preparation takes 1-2 hours.

This is an instant appam recipe, prepared with rice flour, wheat flour, banana, jaggery syrup, and cardamom powder.  I have used 1/8 tsp of baking soda if we use baking soda the appam will be soft and fluffy.  Here no soaking and grinding and also I didn’t deep fried it, cooked with paniyaram pan / Appe pan / Appakara. It tastes as same as the deep-fried appam. You can use appe pan, or fry it in ghee, both tastes good.

You can prepare the same with some variations as you can prepare the same recipe without bananas. You can make it only with wheat flour, without adding rice flour. You can replace the rice flour with maida. I have used shredded coconut, you can fry the shredded in ghee or use finely chopped fresh coconut fried in ghee, it will be tastier than shredded coconut. Baking soda is optional you can skip baking soda if you don’t like it.
