Arisi Paruppu Sadam/Dal Rice is a traditional dish of Coimbatore. This is a simple and healthy one-pot meal. Arisi Paruppu Sadam is rice combined with toor dal, onion, tomato, garlic, and chilli powder/sambar powder. The original recipe doesn’t have vegetables, if you want to make it healthy, you can add any kind of vegetables preferably carrot, beans, peas, potato, or drumstick. Arisi paruppu sadam goes well with potato roast, papad, pickles, or even with raita.

Notes

  • While preparing arisi paruppu sadam, you can add vegetables of your choice, like drumstick, potato, carrots, etc.
  • You can add ghee, before closing the cooker lid, it will bring a nice aroma to the rice.
  • Adjust the sambar powder according to your spiciness.
  • Adjust the water according to the rice quality and the pressure cooker.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup Rice (200 grams)
  • 1/2 cup Toor Dal (100 grams)
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds/Jeera
  • 1/4 tsp Fenugreek seeds
  • Few Curry leaves
  • 2 Green chilies
  • 5 Garlic cloves
  • 1 large Onion
  • 1 Tomato
  • Salt as needed
  • 1 tsp Chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
Instructions
  1. Soak 1 cup of rice and 1/2 cup of toor dal together for 30 minutes. Once done, drain it with a colander and keep it aside.

  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds,1 tsp cumin seeds, 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds, and a few curry leaves, allow it to pop.

  3. Add 5 garlic cloves, 2 green chilis, saute for a minute.

  4. Add 1 sliced onion, fry till the onion becomes translucent.

  5. Add 1 sliced tomato, and cook until the tomato becomes mushy.

  6. Now add 1 tsp of chilli powder, 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder and required salt and mix well.

  7. Add 3 cups of water for 1 cup of rice (or as per rice quality).

  8. Once the water starts boiling, add soaked rice and dal.

  9. Pressure cook for 3 whistles and wait for the pressure to release.

  10. Arisi Paruppu sadam ready, fluff the rice with a spatula.

  11. Serve hot.
