French toast is an easy and healthy recipe made with bread and egg. French toast made with bread soaked in the mixture of beaten egg, sugar, milk, vanilla essence, cinnamon powder and fried in butter. It is also called Bombay toast in our place in Chennai. It is healthy food for kids as it contains eggs and milk. The goodness in eggs and milk makes me prepare this dish once a week. Delicious if served with maple syrup.
Variations
- To make eggless french toast replace the eggs with custard powder, whisk together custard powder and milk and make a thick and creamy texture. Dip bread slices in it and toast them in butter.
- Custard powder can be replaced with cornstarch and vanilla essence.
- To make the french toast savoury version replace the sugar, vanilla essence and cinnamon powder with crushed pepper, salt and Italian seasoning.
- Top with a lot of grated cheese or smashed banana, apple or strawberry.
Notes
- Use day-old bread, for this recipe. Fresh bread is not recommended.
- Beat the egg, milk, and sugar mixture until frothy to make the french toast fluffy.
- I used regular white bread, you can also use multi-grain or brown bread.

- 4 Bread slices
- 2 Eggs
- 1/4 cup Milk
- 2 tsp Sugar
- 1 pinch Salt
- 1/4 tsp Vanilla essence
- 2 tsp Butter
- 1/2 tsp Cinnamon powder

Select a bowl that is shallow or wide enough to soak the bread and add 1 egg to the bowl.

Add the half amount of milk, cinnamon powder, vanilla, salt, and sugar.

Whisk everything together.

Dip bread slices in egg mixture and spread evenly on both sides.

The mixture is enough for 2 slices of bread, repeat for the remaining slices.

Melt butter in a pan, place bread, and cook on medium flame.

Flip over and cook till golden brown.

Serve hot with honey or maple syrup.
