Jeera rice is super quick rice made with rice and cumin seeds. You can make jeera rice in 25 minutes, which is perfect for a lunch box. Jeera rice does not contain any spice powder and can be eaten with any veg or non-vegetarian gravies like mushroom masala, paneer gravy or chicken gravy.

There are 2 methods for jeera rice, in the first one rice is cooked in a grainy texture with whole spices and then a tempering made with cumin seeds is added to the rice.

Another method is cumin pulao, which is a one-pot meal, whole spices are sauteed in ghee and rice is cooked along with spices. Here in this recipe, I have made jeera pulao in pressure, but it can also be done in a pan.

Notes

  • Use good quality basmati rice or any other long-grain rice for cumin rice.
  • Soak the rice for no more than 15-20 minutes. If soaked for too long, the rice will become mushy.
  • Add 1.5 cups of water to 1 cup of soaked rice. Otherwise, it may require 1.75 to 2, and the amount of water depends on the quality of the rice, so adjust the water accordingly.
  • Fry the whole spice in ghee to get the nice aroma of the spices.
