Aval Payasam is an easy dessert that can be done very quickly just in 10 – 15 minutes. Aval is flattened rice which is also called poha. There are many different payasam varieties in south India,  javvarisi payasam, paruppu payasam are most frequently prepared for festivals. Here I am sharing the payasam recipe with jaggery that makes this dish tasty and healthy. Aval Payasam can be done on special days like Krishna Jayanti, Krithika and is suitable for auspicious occasions.

Some tips to make delicious Aval Payasam

  • There are different types of Aval (flattened rice) available in the shops like thin poha, thick poha and red rice poha,  you can use thick poha or red poha for payasam.
  • Use full-fat milk without adding water.
  • Roast the poha well in ghee, to make payasam aromatic.
  • You can also add raisins along with cashew nuts.
  • You can also add sugar instead of jaggery, if you are adding sugar, add 1/2 to 3/4 cup or according to your taste.

Poha milk kheer

Ingredients
  • Milk - ¾ Liter (3 cups)
  • Aval - 1 cup (100g)
  • Jaggery - ½ Cup (120g)
  • Ghee - 1 tbsp
  • Cashew nuts - 10
  • Cardamom Powder - ¼ tsp
Instructions
  1. Add 1 litre of milk to a pan.

  2. Boil on medium heat once done, keep it aside.  

  3. Add 1 tsp of ghee to a pan and when the ghee is hot add 10 - 15 cashew nuts lightly chopped.

  4. Put on medium heat and fry till golden brown.

  5. Then take it apart. 

  6. Then in the same pan add 1/2 cup of aval.

  7. Roast till slightly brown and aromatic.

  8. Then add boiled milk.

  9. Put on medium heat and cook until the poha becomes soft.

  10. In a bowl, add 1/2 cup of jaggery.

  11. Add a little water and bring to a boil over medium heat.

  12. Once the poha cooked well, filter and add the jaggery syrup.

  13. Then boil for 2 - 3 minutes.

  14. Now add the roasted cashew nuts.

  15. Add 1/4 tsp of cardamom powder and mix well. 

  16. Delicious aval payasam is ready to serve.
