Red Aval Payasam is a delicious yet healthy payasam that can be made very quickly. This can be done in 10 – 15 minutes. It is perfect for all special occasions and offering to god on festival days. We prepare red aval payasam for karthigai deepam and Tamil new year.
Notes
- Red rice flakes are available in stores such as thick and thin variety, both are great for making payasam. Thin variety aval will get cooked faster.
- Instead of adding red aval, you can add regular white rice flakes.
- You can replace the sugar with the same quantity of jaggery syrup.
- Adding coconut is your choice and can be done without adding coconut too.
- You can add 3 – 4 tsp of condensed milk to enhance the taste if desired.

Red rice flakes pudding
- Ghee - 2 tbsp
- Red Rice Flakes - ½ cup - 75g
- Boiled Milk - ½ litre - 500ml
- Sugar - ¼ cup - 50g
- Cashews - 10
- Raisins - 10
- Grated Coconut - 4 tsp
- Cardamoms - 4

Add 1 tbsp of ghee to a pan.

When the ghee is hot, add ½ cup of red aval.

Roast until it becomes fragrant.

When the aval is fried, add ½ litre of boiled milk.

Put it on medium heat and cook for 5 to 6 minutes or until it becomes soft.

Add 1 tbsp ghee to a pan.

When hot, add 10 cashew nuts and fry till golden brown.

Add 10 raisins and fry till done.

Add 4 tsp of grated coconut and fry till fragrant. Then take them apart.

Once the aval cooked well, add ¼ cup of sugar.

Then add 4 crushed cardamoms.

Then add the roasted cashews, raisins and coconut and mix well.

Delicious aval payasam is ready to serve.
