Bonda Soup is a delicious dish derived from Karnataka. There are many different types of bonda in Tamil Nadu potato stuffed bonda, idli batter bonda, semiya bonda, etc. Bonda soup is slightly different from these, it is urad dal bonda is soaked in the soup made of toor dal, while the taste is immense.

  • Sprinkle little water while grinding batter for bonda, It is difficult to make bonda if the batter is watery.
  • When making soup add the cooked toor dal and then pour the required amount of water to make the soup consistency.
  • If the soup is thick, bonda may not soak in the soup.
  • You can add green chillies to your taste.
  • You can prepare plain bonda without soup, can follow the same recipe to make bonda.

Ingredients 

Bonda

  • Urad dal – 1 cup / 100 g
  • Grated coconut – 1/4 cup
  • Sliced green chillies – 3
  • Chopped  ginger – 1 piece
  • Chopped curry leaves  – Few
  • Cumin – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt – as needed
  • Cooking oil – for frying

Soup

  • Toor dal – 1/2 cup / 100 g (steamed and mashed)
  • Cooking oil – 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Cumin – ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves – Few
  • Green chillies – 5 sliced lengthwise
  • Onion – 1 (chopped finely)
  • Tomato – 1
  • Salt – as required
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Asafoetida – 1 pinch
  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp
  • Finely chopped coriander – Few

Recipe

  1. Wash 1 cup of urad dal and soak for 2 hours.
  2. After two hours, drain the water, put it in a mixer or grinder, add a little water and grind.
  3. Add 1/4 cup of grated coconut, 3 green chillis, 1 piece chopped ginger, and a few chopped curry leaves.
  4. Add ½ tsp of cumin seeds and the required amount of salt and mix well.
  5. After mixing well, wet your hands and roll the batter into a small ball and drop it in the hot oil.
  6. Cook until golden brown.
  7. Once done, drain and keep it aside.
  8. Bonda is ready.

Soup

  1. Heat 2 tsp cooking oil in a pan.
  2. Add 1/2  tsp of mustard seeds, 1/2  tsp of cumin, a few curry leaves, and 5 green chillies.
  3. Add chopped onion and cook until translucent.
  4. Then add chopped tomato.
  5. Cook until the tomatoes are tender.
  6. Then add the cooked and mashed toor dal.
  7. Add 2 cups of water.
  8. Stir in the required amount of salt, ¼ tsp of turmeric powder, and a pinch of asafoetida.
  9. Let it boil for 2 – 3  minutes.
  10. Then add a tsp of lemon juice and a little chopped coriander.
  11. Put the bondas on a cup or a plate and pour hot soup over it to soak or serve hot.
