Medu Pakoda is also known by many names as medu bonda, pattanam pakoda etc. Crunchy outside and soft and crispy inside. A medu pakoda with coffee or tea in the evening would be fantastic. This can be done very easily using ingredients available at home.

Some tips to make delicious Medu Pakoda

  • Mix butter and baking soda by hand until well dissolved. 
  • If the baking soda is not mixed properly it is likely to be lumpy.
  • Instead of adding butter, you can also add vanaspati.
  • The pakora batter should be thick and if it is watery add a little flour and mix.
  • Roll the dough lightly without pressing too much.
  • Fry in oil over medium heat, it is likely to burn if the flame is high.
  • If it is fried with low heat oil, it is possible to absorb more oil.
  • Fry until golden brown on the same fire without increasing /decreasing the fire from time to time.

Crispy Evening Snack

Ingredients
  • Butter - 3 tsp
  • Baking soda - ½ tsp
  • Gram flour - 1 cup (100g)
  • Rice flour - ½ cup (80g)
  • Roasted gram flour - ⅓ cup (40g)
  • Onion - 1 
  • Ginger - 1 piece 
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Coriander leaves - few
  • Green chillis - 3 
  • Fennel seeds - ½ tsp
  • Cumin seeds - ½ tsp
  • Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
  • Chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida - ½ tsp
  • Salt - as needed
  • Cooking oil - for frying
Instructions
  1. Add 3 tsp melted butter to a bowl

  2. Add ½ tsp of baking soda.

  3. Combine and mix by hand until the baking soda is well dissolved.

  4. After mixing without lumps, add 1 cup of gram flour. 

  5. Add ½ cup of rice flour.

  6. Add ⅓  cup roasted gram flour to it.

  7. Combine the flour and the butter and mix well.

  8. Then add chopped onion, finely chopped 1 piece of ginger, chopped curry leaves, a little coriander finely chopped and 3 green chillies.

  9. Add ½ tsp fennel seeds, ½ tsp cumin seeds, ½ tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp chilli powder, required salt and ½ tsp asafoetida.

  10. Mix well once again by hand.

  11. Then sprinkle a little water and mix into a thick dough.

  12. After mixing, roll lightly into small balls.

  13. Add them to oil and fry over medium heat.

  14. Stir frequently.

  15. When the pakoda is golden brown, drain the oil and set it aside.

  16. Delicious medu pakoda is ready to serve.
